President Marcos promised to boost support for Philippine sports to produce more medal-winning athletes following Carlos Yulo’s incredible achievement of winning two gold medals at the Olympics in Paris.
After the groundbreaking of a flood control project, President Marcos gave Yulo high praise and said that he deserved “everything that anybody is willing to give him.”
He is already financially rewarded from a number of sources… What more can the government do to increase our Olympic medalists? I will ask him when we next meet. The President declared.
Marcos made these comments in response to questions about whether he plans to give additional cash incentives to the Filipino gymnast.
“Making more medalists like him is my primary goal. Should we rearrange our plans? Does our funding need to be increased?Marcos asked.
“I think Yulo is the best person to ask what more we can do,” he continued.
Yulo’s two gold medal wins at the Olympics will earn him P20 million from the government, according to President Marcos.
“He should have won in Tokyo; maybe he just got nervous. But now, we’ve seen his true capability,” he said.
Carlos Yulo received the Congressional Medal of Excellence from the House of Representatives yesterday in recognition of his two gold medals from the current Olympics in Paris. Speaker Martin Romualdez’s House Resolution 1864 was unanimously approved by both the administration and the opposition. This award is the highest honor bestowed upon Filipino achievers in the fields of sports, business, medicine, science, and arts and culture.
Along with Yulo’s accomplishment, Filipino boxer Aira Villegas finished third on Wednesday in the women’s 50 kg boxing competition at the Olympics in Paris.
Villegas received praise from President Marcos and First Lady Liza Marcos for her outstanding performance.
“Aira, congratulations! You put up a fantastic fight in your Olympic debut. The First Lady posted on Facebook, “We are all so proud of you and we can’t wait to welcome you home.”
The Philippines is still ranked 22nd in the Olympic team standings, ahead of the other nations in Southeast Asia, with two gold and one bronze medal.
