The Korean Basketball League (KBL) is becoming a popular destination for the Philippines’ finest basketball talents. Alongside Japan’s B.League, the KBL offers overseas opportunities for Filipino athletes to showcase their skills on a bigger stage.
Currently, 10 Filipino players are making waves in the KBL, including UAAP standouts Kevin Quiambao and JD Cagulangan, who joined after their memorable Season 87 men’s basketball finals rematch in December. Here’s a closer look at the talented Filipino contingent:
SJ Belangel – Daegu KOGAS Pegasus

Like Thirdy Ravena in Japan, SJ Belangel is a trailblazer in the KBL. After a stellar collegiate career with the Ateneo Blue Eagles, Belangel signed with Daegu KOGAS Pegasus in 2022.
In his third year, Belangel is enjoying a breakout season, recently posting career-highs of 36 points and 8 assists against Seoul Samsung Thunders. Averaging 14.2 points, 4.9 assists, and 1.6 steals, he has also earned a spot in the 2025 KBL All-Star Game, solidifying his reputation as a rising star in Korean basketball.
Justin Gutang – Seoul Samsung Thunders

Former St. Benilde standout Justin Gutang has transitioned from Changwon LG to the Seoul Samsung Thunders. Building on a strong sophomore season, where he averaged 8.7 points and 3.1 rebounds, Gutang continues to contribute as a reliable playmaker.
He’s also set to participate in the 2025 KBL All-Star Game as an injury replacement, further affirming his impact in Korea.
Ethan Alvano – Wonju DB Promy

Ethan Alvano made history in the 2023-2024 season by becoming the first non-Korean KBL MVP. Leading Wonju DB to the playoffs, Alvano averaged 15.9 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.0 rebounds.
Now in his fifth season, the 28-year-old is maintaining his form, with improved stats of 16.8 points, 5.6 assists, and 2 steals per game. Alvano’s stellar performances have also secured him a place in the 2025 KBL All-Star Game.
Calvin Epistola – Busan KCC Egis

Filipino-Canadian guard Calvin Epistola continues to bring hustle and grit to reigning KBL champions Busan KCC Egis. While his averages of 3.2 points and 1.6 rebounds may not jump off the page, his energy and effort remain invaluable.
Miguel Oczon – Ulsan Mobis Hyundai Phoebus

Ex-St. Benilde sharpshooter Miguel Oczon is showcasing his scoring prowess in his second year with Ulsan Mobis Hyundai Phoebus. Despite fluctuating minutes, Oczon recently set a career-high with 31 points, including six triples, in a narrow loss to Seoul SK Knights.
Juan Gomez de Liaño – Seoul SK Knights

After stints in Japan and Lithuania, Juan Gomez de Liaño now plays for Seoul SK Knights. Limited minutes have marked his first season, but his D-League appearances have been promising, where he averaged 20 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in four games.
An injury cut his debut season short, but Juan remains poised for future success.
Carl Tamayo – Changwon LG Sakers

Carl Tamayo has found a better fit with Changwon LG after an unremarkable stint in Japan. Averaging 15 points and 6.3 rebounds, the 6’8” forward recently delivered a 37-point performance against Seoul Samsung, marking the highest scoring output by a Filipino import since 2022.
Javi Gomez de Liaño – Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters

Replacing Rhenz Abando in Anyang, Javi Gomez de Liaño is making his presence felt, averaging 6.5 points and 1.8 rebounds. Highlights include a career-best 17-point outing against Changwon.
JD Cagulangan – Suwon KT Sonicboom

Season 87 Finals MVP JD Cagulangan has made an immediate impact with Suwon KT Sonicboom. In just two games, he’s impressed with a stat line of 7 points, 9 assists, and 5 steals, showing he could be the perfect fit for head coach Song Young-jin’s system.
Kevin Quiambao – Goyang Sono Skygunners

Kevin Quiambao’s much-anticipated debut with Goyang Sono was unfortunately cut short by an ankle injury. The two-time UAAP MVP scored six points before exiting, but once healthy, he’s expected to be a key contributor with his all-around skills.
The Filipino wave in the KBL continues to grow, with each player making their mark in their unique way. Keep an eye on these stars as they represent Philippine basketball on the international stage!
