Zamboanga Congressman Pushes Death Penalty for Corruption

A proposed bill pushing for the death penalty for corrupt government officials has been trending on social media.

House Bill No. 11211, also called the “Death Penalty for Corruption Act,” recently gained attention. The bill aims to punish corrupt public officials through a firing squad.

The principal author of this bill is Zamboanga 1st District Representative Khymer Adan Olaso. He explained that despite existing laws against corruption, it remains widespread in the government.

“Despite the existence of numerous laws aimed at combating graft, malversation, and plunder, the persistence of these crimes suggests that current measures are insufficient to deter public officials from engaging in corrupt practices,” Olaso said in his explanatory note.

Olaso is currently serving his first term as the representative of Zamboanga’s 1st District in the 19th Congress. While he still has terms left to serve as a congressman, he filed his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) in October 2024 to run for mayor of Zamboanga City.

In the upcoming 2025 National and Local Elections, one of Olaso’s opponents for the mayoral position is Zamboanga 2nd District Representative Jose Manuel Dalipe, a member of the Lakas-CMD party.

In a previous interview, Olaso shared that while he initially planned to seek a second term in Congress, his family and friends convinced him to run for mayor instead.
