Sack of Bones Found in Taal Lake

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has officially started a search and retrieval operation in Taal Lake, where the missing cockfight enthusiasts were allegedly dumped.

During the operation, a sack containing what looked like bones was found about 10 meters from the shore. According to Batangas Police Provincial Director Col. Geovanny Emerick Sibalo, the sack was immediately turned over to SOCO (Scene of the Crime Operatives) for forensic examination to confirm if the bones are human.

Early in the morning, the PCG brought in equipment for the operation, including diving gear, oxygen tanks, cadaver bags, medical kits, and boats. The operation started with mapping and assessment in the area believed to be the dumping site.

They also used drones and underwater vehicles to check the lake’s condition. Security around Taal Lake and parts of Laguna is now being handled by the PNP-CIDG.

The Philippine Navy’s special divers joined the operation. According to Captain Percie Alcos, Taal Lake is one of the deepest in the country, reaching 170 to 200 meters. The Navy first deployed underwater drones before sending divers. Three teams of 12 divers were deployed, capable of diving up to 94 meters, and also used underwater drones.

Earlier, suspect Julie Patidongan claimed that the missing cockfighters were thrown into Taal Lake. He pointed to businessman Atong Ang as the mastermind and also linked actress Gretchen Barretto, who is reportedly close to the businessman. Both denied the accusations.

Authorities said the lake’s deepest part is about 198 meters—equivalent to a 60-story building. Bad weather, strong water currents, and possible volcanic activity make the search even harder.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla earlier said that as many as 100 cockfight enthusiasts may have been dumped in the lake from 2021 to 2022—not just the 34 previously reported.
