Romualdez: 60-Day Rice Import Ban Will Help Filipino Farmers

Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez strongly supported President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s decision to stop importing rice for 60 days starting September 1. He said this move will help protect Filipino farmers and improve the country’s food security.

“This is more than just a policy. This is standing up for Filipino farmers and showing the world we will not forget those who feed us,” Romualdez said.

He called the President’s order a brave answer to farmers and other groups in agriculture who are asking for help because cheap imported rice is lowering the price of local palay (unhusked rice).

Romualdez said this 60-day break is a good time to support and strengthen the local rice industry.

“Our farmers have suffered for too long. During harvest, they see rice prices drop because of imported rice. This break gives us time to rest, think, and take strong action,” he added.

He also mentioned Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr.’s warning: if the Rice Tariffication Law is not changed, the Philippines might lose its ability to grow enough rice.

“If our food growers say they cannot survive anymore, we must listen and act,” Romualdez said.

He promised to support House Bill No. 1 or the “RICE Act.” This law aims to give more power to the National Food Authority (NFA), let the government better manage rice imports, and ensure fair palay prices for farmers.

“This is not about rejecting trade. It’s about giving priority to Filipino food and farmers. We need a system that works for our people, not one that hurts them,” Romualdez said.

He also asked government agencies to stop hoarding, price manipulation, and unfair practices that harm farmers and consumers.

He urged the Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Customs to work together to make sure existing rice is sold at affordable prices for ordinary Filipinos.

“Rice is not just food—it’s part of every Filipino meal. When prices go up or farmers suffer, Filipino families suffer too,” Romualdez added.

He said true food security can’t depend only on imports. He asked Congress, the government, and all groups to review and improve the Rice Tariffication Law so it really helps the people.

“This is our chance to fix a broken system. We must do it for every farmer, every mother in the market, and every child who eats rice with dried fish or egg. Let’s do this right,” Romualdez said.

He ended by saying the House of Representatives will work closely with President Marcos to create real reforms that help farmers, keep prices stable, and protect the country’s future.
