Various people’s organizations held a protest march along Commonwealth Avenue to the University of the Philippines (UP) in Quezon City on October 26, 2024, ahead of the launch of the International Peoples’ Tribunal. The event aims to hold the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank accountable for their alleged roles in driving inequality, impoverishment, and deprivation across the Global South.
Timed to coincide with the IMF and World Bank’s 80th anniversary and annual meetings in Washington, D.C., the tribunal will convene at the UP Film Center.
It will be presided over by an International Panel of Judges, featuring economists, lawyers, and academicians. Organizers say this is the first tribunal of its kind in the Philippines, with follow-up sessions planned in Nepal, India, Africa, and Latin America.
The Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) is leading the tribunal, in collaboration with over 30 social justice and human rights organizations from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
The final verdict is expected in April 2025.
