Filipino advocacy groups held a protest in Mendiola, Manila, during the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba recently.

The action condemned Japan’s continued funding of fossil fuel projects in the Philippines and Asia. Organizations including the Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD), Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ), and Don’t Gas Asia led the demonstration. Other groups such as Sanlakas, Kilos para sa Kalikasan (K4K),

ZOTO, APOLA, and KPML also participated, calling for a swift transition to renewable energy. Protesters delivered statements to expose what they described as Japan’s role in deepening fossil fuel dependence in the region.
