Former President Rodrigo Duterte wants to return to the Philippines as soon as possible because of his old age.
This was shared by Vice President Sara Duterte during an interview with reporters outside the Scheveningen Prison in The Hague, Netherlands, on Friday. She had just finished a nearly one-hour phone call with her father.
According to VP Sara, her father is in good condition, but he kept saying that he wants to go home.
“He said, ‘I am an old man, I can die anytime but I want to die in my country,’” VP Sara said.
She replied that she understands him, and their lawyers are working every day on his case. Some people also visit the former president to explain what they are doing to help him.
Earlier, Duterte’s lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman, said they are planning to file a petition with the International Criminal Court (ICC) asking for temporary release.
When asked about the possibility that the court might allow temporary release but not in the Philippines, VP Sara said the decision is up to their legal team. She trusts them to choose the best legal strategy.
