Authorities are warning Filipinos about online love scams as Valentine’s Day approaches. Approximately 15 Filipinos fall victim to these scams every day, according to the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC).
Scammers often use fake profiles on social media to trick people looking for love. They build trust through emotional manipulation and then ask for money or financial help.
CICC Executive Director Alexander Ramos said Filipinos’ caring and hardworking nature makes them easy targets for these schemes.
To stay safe, the CICC advises being cautious when talking to people online. Watch out for warning signs such as refusing video calls, avoiding sharing personal information, or suddenly asking for money or investments.
The CICC urges people to check social media profiles carefully, avoid rushing into online relationships, and never share personal or financial details with strangers.
Scammers often take advantage of loneliness during Valentine’s season, making prevention key. Anyone who suspects they are being targeted should report the incident immediately to authorities.
