The three impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte will now move forward in Congress.
House Secretary General Reginald Velasco said there is no need to wait for a fourth impeachment complaint. This week, the three complaints will be sent to Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez for action.
“We have given them enough time (for the fourth complaint), so we will act on the three complaints this week and send them to the Speaker,” Velasco said.
He also clarified that the impeachment process is still ongoing.
“The impeachment is not over because at any time, one-third of the House members can sign the complaint in my presence, and then it goes straight to the Senate. It will no longer pass through the House Committee on Justice,” Velasco explained.
At least 103 members of the House of Representatives must support the complaint for it to be sent to the Senate, which will act as the impeachment court. If this happens, there will be no need for the House Committee on Justice to hold hearings.
Despite protests from different groups and calls from some lawmakers to take action, Velasco said he has not received any orders to delay the process.
The three impeachment complaints were filed on December 2, 4, and 19, 2023. They accuse VP Sara of misusing ₱650 million in confidential funds when she was Vice President and Education Secretary.
