Before giving a pet as a Christmas gift, think carefully about the responsibility it brings.
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) reminded everyone through a Facebook post that pets are not toys or surprises. They should only be given to people who are fully ready for the long-term responsibility of caring for an animal.
“Show kindness this Christmas not only to people but also to animals who depend on us for their care and well-being,” PAWS said.
The group explained that gifting pets is often not a good idea, even if the person loves animals or if the intention is to teach them responsibility.
“Unlike objects, pets have emotional, physical, and mental needs. Owning a pet is a serious, lifelong responsibility that requires planning, preparation, and readiness in all aspects – emotionally, mentally, and financially,” they added.
PAWS pointed out that many pets given as gifts end up neglected or abandoned once the excitement wears off.
If someone receives a pet gift but knows they are not ready to care for it, PAWS advised politely declining the gift.
Pet owners are also reminded to spay or neuter their pets before rehoming them to stop unwanted litters and reduce the number of homeless animals.
Lastly, PAWS encouraged people to adopt or foster pets from shelters instead of buying them from pet stores.
