Sunwest rejects reports of collapsed flood control project in Occidental Mindoro

Construction firm Sunwest Incorporated has pushed back against allegations that portions of its flood control projects in Occidental Mindoro gave way, following reports of supposed damage along the Busuanga River.

Concerns were raised after some residents and local leaders pointed out visible cracks in certain parts of the newly constructed dike.

In its official statement, Sunwest clarified that only a three to four-meter crack was found in the Barangay Aguas dike, representing less than one percent of the 567-meter structure. The company also emphasized that its other flood control works in Rizal and San Jose towns remain intact and undamaged.

Despite the clarification, some local officials questioned the design and continuity of the dike, pointing to inconsistencies in structure sizes and incomplete linkages. Community members likewise called on contractors to ensure higher quality standards to prevent recurring floods from affecting their homes and livelihoods.
