Rep. Herrera Calls for Stronger Support for Solo Parents

House Deputy Minority Leader and Bagong Henerasyon Representative Bernadette Herrera is pushing for more benefits and economic opportunities for the 15 million solo parents across the country.

Herrera, known as the “Solon of Solo Parents” and the main author of Republic Act No. 11861 or the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act, is calling for deeper and immediate actions to address the needs of the growing number of solo parents in the country.

“Solo parents are an important part of our society, but they often face heavy burdens with little help. It’s time to give them the tools they need to succeed and thrive,” said Herrera.

Herrera emphasized the need to strengthen financial subsidies, improve access to housing, and prioritize mental health services for solo parents and their children.

She is also advocating for flexible work arrangements, livelihood training programs to boost earning capacity, and financial literacy workshops to help solo parents manage their resources effectively.

In a series of consultations, Herrera met with solo parents from different parts of the country to hear their concerns directly.

She also encouraged Congress, government agencies, and private organizations to work together to address the needs of solo parents.

According to Herrera, supporting solo parents is critical to the country’s progress.
