A new museum about the Great Wall of China opened on June 15, 2025, in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province. It is called the Shanhaiguan Museum of the Great Wall. The museum is large, covering seven hectares and 30,000 square meters. Inside, there are five permanent exhibits and three temporary ones. It displays over 11,000 old cultural items.
This museum is part of China’s bigger plan to build a Great Wall Culture Park. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism is leading this project and has asked 15 areas along the Wall to make local development plans.
One of the main exhibits in the museum focuses on Shanhaiguan Pass, an important military spot in China’s history. The museum shows ancient weapons, armor, and objects from different Chinese dynasties. Deputy curator Guo Ying said the museum’s goal is to protect the Great Wall’s history and share it with more people through cultural events, research, and digital displays.
Shanhaiguan is known as the eastern gate of the Great Wall. The whole Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was built over 2,000 years, from the Spring and Autumn period to the Ming Dynasty. Today, many parts of the Wall still exist, stretching more than 21,000 kilometers across northern China. It continues to be a popular place for tourists.
