On Thursday at Gapan City, Nueva Ecija, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led over the groundbreaking of the Meralco Terra (MTerra) Solar Project. It will be the world’s largest integrated solar and battery storage facility when it is finished.
Marcos emphasized the project’s potential to position the Philippines as a leader in renewable energy during his remarks at the ceremony. By 2027, the 3,500-hectare complex that spans Bulacan and Nueva Ecija is expected to be operational. It would cut carbon emissions by more than 4.3 million metric tons per year, which is equivalent to removing three million gasoline-powered cars from the road, and supply electricity to more than 2 million households.
The project will initially connect to the 500-kiloVolt (kV) Nagsaag-San Jose Transmission Line and later to the upcoming Nagsaag-Marilao Transmission Line. In addition to benefiting residents with clean energy, it will generate over 10,000 jobs, stimulate local economies, and drive regional growth.
The PHP200 billion investment reflects confidence in the Philippines’ renewable energy potential, Marcos said, adding that it aligns with the country’s vision for a reliable, sustainable power supply. He emphasized that the project could bring in nearly PHP23 billion in financial benefits over the next decade, accelerating progress.
Marcos urged government agencies and private sector partners to ensure the project’s timely completion and replicate similar initiatives. He commended the efforts of Meralco, Terra Solar Philippines, Solar Philippines New Energy Corporation, and MGen Renewable Energy Inc. in advancing the country’s role in the global energy transition.
