Juan Ponce Enrile Honored for Decades of Dedication

The Philippine Senate has adopted Senate Resolution 1223 to honor former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile (JPE) for his nearly six decades of dedicated service to the nation. The resolution, passed on Tuesday, November 26, recognized Enrile’s contributions in crafting critical legislation and advising eight presidents, including current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Senate President Francis Escudero praised Enrile’s extensive impact, highlighting his legal expertise and leadership in shaping laws on revenue, national defense, peace and order, and social services. “Our country is better off because of Juan Ponce Enrile,” Escudero said, saluting Enrile’s achievements and steadfast commitment to public service.

Escudero underscored Enrile’s pivotal role in Philippine history, from serving as defense secretary under President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. to co-leading the 1986 People Power Revolution alongside Fidel Ramos. Enrile also presided over significant events, such as the 2012 impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, during his four terms as a senator.

Enrile’s long career spans key positions, including finance and justice secretary, member of the Batasan Pambansa, and Cagayan representative. Escudero emphasized Enrile’s enduring influence, describing him as a legal heavyweight who continues to shape policies with brilliance and bravery.

Known for his wit and longevity, Enrile has also inspired lighthearted memes and jokes about his age. Escudero quipped that Enrile’s health and positive outlook, embodied by his phrase “Gusto ko happy ka,” are testaments to his remarkable staying power.

The Senate’s resolution celebrates not just Enrile’s past achievements but his continued dedication to serving the Filipino people. Escudero concluded, “History will judge him kindly, as this Senate honors him today.”
