Holiday Firecracker Incidents: Over 300 Injured, One Dead

The Department of Health (DOH) recorded 340 firecracker-related injuries between December 22, 2024, and January 1, 2025. Of these, 141 new cases were reported on New Year’s Eve. Although the DOH stated that this figure is 64% lower than the previous year, additional reports could still be received.

Males made up the majority of the injured, with 299 cases, while 41 were female. Among the victims, 101 were aged 20 or older, and 239 were 19 or younger. Data from 62 health institutions tracking injuries showed that illegal firecrackers, including “boga,” “5-star,” and “piccolo,” were responsible for 202 cases (59%) of the incidents, according to the DOH.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) also reported incidents of indiscriminate firearm discharges, arresting 21 individuals. Among them were a police officer, a corrections employee, and a security guard. The incidents injured five people and led to the confiscation of 17 firearms. Some cases were linked to alcohol intoxication or personal disputes.

The PNP documented six stray bullet cases, with one injury each in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and the Zamboanga Peninsula. Additionally, 73 individuals were arrested for selling or using illegal firecrackers, with nearly 600,000 items worth about PHP 3.9 million confiscated.

Despite these incidents, the PNP described the celebrations as peaceful, with crimes against people and property dropping by 50% compared to last year. The PNP will continue monitoring holiday activities until January 6 to ensure public safety.
