Duterte: We Can Function Even Without OVP Funds

Vice President Sara Duterte has stated that her office can continue to operate even without a budget, amidst allegations that Congress is trying to defund the Office of the Vice President (OVP). This follows her conflict with lawmakers over the OVP’s proposed P2.037-billion budget for 2025 and accusations against Speaker Martin Romualdez and Rep. Zaldy Co of misusing taxpayer money.

Duterte, in a taped interview, said, “Our office is small, and we can still function without a budget. We will continue serving the people despite these attacks.”

Duterte did not attend a recent House budget hearing, accusing lawmakers of planning a political attack on her instead of discussing the budget. She also claimed that House Deputy Minority Leader France Castro is leading an impeachment plot against her.

Some lawmakers argue that Duterte is facing scrutiny due to unaddressed issues surrounding the P125-million confidential and intelligence funds (CIF) under her office. They believe she should be held accountable for how the funds were used.

Despite criticism, Sen. Ronald dela Rosa and Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez have come to her defense, with Alvarez warning that efforts to impeach Duterte could cause chaos in the country.
