Fifteen public schools in Davao City suspended face-to-face classes on Friday, March 28, because of road closures for a prayer rally celebrating former President Rodrigo Duterte’s 80th birthday.
According to GMA Regional TV, these schools will use blended learning instead.
The 15 affected schools are Bolton Elementary School, Cesario Villa-Abrille Elementary School, CP Garcia Senior High School, Davao City National High School, Doña Pilar Elementary School, Erico Nograles National High School, Jose Rizal Elementary School, Kapt. Tomas Monteverde Central Elementary School, Magallanes Elementary School, Manuel Roxas Elementary School, Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School, Palma Gil Elementary School, Sta. Ana National High School, Sta. Ana Central Elementary School, and Wireless Elementary School.
Some private schools will also suspend classes.
The road closures will start at 1:00 PM and continue until the event ends.
The local government will close C.M. Recto Avenue (from San Pedro St. to Magsaysay Avenue) and Roxas Avenue (from Quezon Boulevard to C. Bangoy St.), according to GMA Regional TV.
The Police Regional Office-Davao (PRO-11) expects around 100,000 people to attend the prayer rally. About 1,800 police officers will be deployed in the area.
Duterte is currently in the International Criminal Court (ICC) detention center for crimes against humanity.
Meanwhile, Honeylet Avanceña and Kitty Duterte have traveled to The Hague, Netherlands, to celebrate Duterte’s birthday.
Vice President Sara Duterte also shared that other family members will visit the Netherlands for the celebration.
