The US has agreed to supply Bell 505 helicopters to the Philippines. The deal is worth roughly $150 million, which is about P9.2 billion. The US State Department said this on May 5.
The sale will happen through a procedure called Foreign Military Sales. This program makes it easier for the US to export military gear to other countries. The package comes with helicopters, spare parts, pilot training, and help with maintenance.
The arrangement says that the Philippines will get Bell 505 helicopters and their rotor blades. There will be training for 22 pilots and six maintenance students. The package also comes with flight simulators, ground support equipment, and five years of help with logistics.
The Bell 505 is a small helicopter. The major application for it is training and simple tasks. Before they move on to more advanced and combat-ready planes, pilots learn on these smaller ones.
The US said the deal would help the Philippines educate stronger pilots and fill in the gaps in their flying skills with rotary-wing aircraft. The training will include flying in adverse weather and getting out of unsafe helicopter locations. There are also classes on how to fix engines and electronics.
The US also argued that the accord helps it reach its foreign policy aims. The United States and the Philippines have a formal defense arrangement, which makes the Philippines a treaty ally of the US. The State Department noted, “The Philippines is an important partner for peace and stability in the region.”
The deal will be handled by Bell Textron, which is situated in Fort Worth, Texas.
The US Congress has to know about big arms sales like this one, but the deal isn’t done yet.
In recent years, the Philippines has been trying to make its military stronger. This happens as tensions between the two countries rise in the South China Sea, where they have had multiple fights.
