3 Eastern Visayas Mayors Trapped in Israel War

Three mayors from Eastern Visayas are stuck in Israel because of the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. They are:

  • Barugo, Leyte Mayor Aron Balais
  • Lawaan, Eastern Samar Mayor Athene Mendros
  • Hindang, Leyte Mayor Betty Cabal

Mayor Balais told reporters in Tacloban that they are now hiding in a bomb-proof shelter near their hotel.

The mayors are part of a study visit by the Israel Agency for International Development Cooperation. The trip is about learning how to improve sustainability and food security in cities.

According to Balais, there are 17 Philippine government officials with them. They are trying to stay safe from the attacks by Iran.

Balais said they have been looking for a way out for three days. They want to go to Jordan, but the borders and airspace are all closed. He could not say the names of the other officials with them because communication is hard due to the bombings.

Mayor Cabal posted on Facebook on June 8 that they arrived safely in Israel with some vice mayors and a congressman, but she did not give their names.

Balais also said they are in contact with the Philippine Embassy. The deputy ambassador visited them on Sunday. Their trip is supposed to end on June 20.

The Philippine Embassy in Israel said a Crisis Management Team has been formed. This team will give relief goods, open shelters, and prepare to bring Filipinos home.

The conflict got worse on June 13. Israeli forces attacked Iran’s nuclear and missile sites, killing top officials and scientists. Iran answered with missile attacks on many parts of Israel.
