US President Donald Trump blamed the former Philippine President for the weakening relationship between the Philippines and America.
During the first meeting between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and President Trump at the White House in Washington D.C., the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties between their countries.
Trump said that while the relationship between the two nations had cooled under a previous pro-China President, it would now grow stronger again.
“I think I can say that the last administration was not getting along with them too well. They didn’t get along with anybody. They didn’t know. Honestly, they didn’t know what they were doing,” Trump said.
Though he did not mention names, it was clear he was referring to former President Rodrigo Duterte, who was known for favoring China. Trump clarified that the current President, Marcos, was not at fault—the problem came from the past administration.
He added that there was nothing wrong with the Philippines having good relations with China, but the alliance with America was also important.
Trump expressed strong support for Marcos’ independent foreign policy, especially his efforts to build partnerships with traditional allies like the US.
“I think he has to do what’s right for his country. I’ve always said, you know, make the Philippines great again. Do whatever you need to do,” Trump said.
