Thousands Rally for Duterte’s Freedom in Davao

Thousands of supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte held a unity walk during the Araw ng Dabaw celebration, calling for his return from The Hague, Netherlands. Duterte is currently awaiting trial for crimes against humanity.

Around 20,000 people joined the event, but only 3,000 attended the rally at Rizal Park. Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, and other officials criticized the Marcos administration for allowing Duterte’s arrest.

Mayor Duterte expressed anger at President Marcos, saying in Cebuano, “My father buried your father in Libingan ng mga Bayani. Now, you sent him to jail. We will fight back.” He also shared his emotional struggles since his father’s arrest.

Supporters wore black shirts and red armbands with messages like “We stand with FPRRD” and “Bring him home.” Many participants left after the parade, while only a few stayed for the rally.

Duterte was arrested last week and taken to The Hague. He faces charges of ordering the killings of suspected drug criminals while serving as Davao City mayor and president.

Senator Dela Rosa Speaks Out

At a prayer rally in Manila, Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa blamed the Marcos administration for Duterte’s arrest. He called it a political move and criticized President Marcos for allowing Interpol to detain Duterte.

Dela Rosa, who led Duterte’s war on drugs as police chief, said he felt betrayed by Marcos. He claimed Marcos had previously assured him that the government did not recognize the ICC’s authority.

Lawmakers Criticize Duterte’s Camp

Some lawmakers accused Duterte’s allies of turning the ICC trial into a political drama. House Assistant Majority Leader Jude Acidre said the case is about justice for drug war victims, not politics.

“This is a trial for thousands of Filipinos who were killed without due process,” Acidre said. He argued that Duterte’s team lacks a strong legal strategy and is treating the case as a political battle.

Deputy Majority Leader Francisco Paolo Ortega added that political speeches would not change the facts. He said Duterte’s lawyers should defend him in court instead of making public statements.
