MANILA, Philippines — In Paris, Team Philippines is poised to build on its recent Olympic success and showcase its talent on the global stage. Following Hidilyn Diaz’s historic gold in Tokyo, the team of 22 athletes aims to continue the momentum and create a golden streak in various disciplines.
The Philippine delegation, finalized after rigorous qualifying stages, includes notable names from boxing like silver medalist Carlo Paalam, bronze medalist Eumir Marcial, and featherweight champion Nesthy Petecio. Other standout athletes include two-time world champion gymnast Carlos Yulo and pole vault star EJ Obiena.
Despite Diaz’s absence in the -59kg weightlifting category, Elreen Ando leads the lifters’ charge alongside newcomers John Fabuar Ceniza and Vanessa Sarno. The team also features returning Olympians like golfer Bianca Pagdanganan and judoka Kiyomi Watanabe, as well as promising debutants in various sports.
President Abraham Tolentino of the Philippine Olympic Committee has set ambitious goals, aiming to surpass the country’s Tokyo medal tally. With preparations including a month-long training camp in Metz, France, the team is primed to compete at their best.
Meanwhile, EJ Obiena recently placed fourth in the Meeting de Paris, showcasing his prowess in the pole vault amidst tough competition from global rivals.
