Senator Imee Marcos has urged her brother, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., to be careful and thoughtful in his discussions with US President Donald Trump.
The senator warned that any agreement should be fair and equal so that the US sees the Philippines as a country with dignity and strong principles.
She also said that trade deals should be about cooperation, not surrender.
As a close military and economic ally of the US, the president should push for a 10% tariff rate—or at least match Indonesia’s 19%—since the proposed taxes on the country seem too high.
The senator added that the president should not sign any deal that would harm the Philippines, even if it comes with gold, personal promises, or alliance agreements.
She also emphasized that the Philippines should not allow the US to control services and supplies, as this could hurt the country’s own economic policies.
