Passengers in Davao City were surprised when a jeepney driver offered free rides on December 1. The driver, Edwin Recososa, has been driving for 35 years. He decided to give “libre sakay” because his son Dave passed the Civil Engineer board exam. Inside his jeepney, he placed a sign saying, “Free ride today as thanks because my son passed the Board Exam as a Civil Engineer.”
A passenger named Judy Tereso shared the story online, and it quickly became viral. Many people were touched by the father’s simple but heartfelt gesture. Edwin said that he once dreamed of becoming an engineer, but because of poverty, he had to give up his dream. Instead, he worked hard every day so his son could continue the dream he could not reach.
Dave said he did not expect his father to celebrate his success in this way. But for people who know Edwin, this was no surprise. He is described as a quiet and hardworking father who sacrifices daily for his family.
The free ride was not only about saving money. It was a symbol of a father’s pride, gratitude, and happiness. It showed how much Edwin loves his son and how proud he is of his achievement.
