VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis experienced two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency on Monday, further complicating his battle with double pneumonia, according to the Vatican.
The 88-year-old pontiff has been hospitalised at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14 due to a severe respiratory infection that has led to additional complications. Recent medical updates indicate that a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus caused the respiratory distress, accompanied by a bronchospasm similar to an asthma attack.
Doctors conducted two bronchoscopies to assess his air passages and provided non-invasive mechanical ventilation to assist with breathing. His prognosis remains guarded, suggesting he is not yet out of danger.
This latest development follows earlier reports of another airway constriction last Friday, raising concerns after previous optimistic updates over the weekend.
Pope Francis has faced multiple health challenges in recent years. His medical history includes lung infections due to pleurisy in his youth, which resulted in the partial removal of one lung. Double pneumonia, which inflames and scars both lungs, can make breathing increasingly difficult.
His current hospitalisation marks his longest absence from public view since his papacy began in March 2013. It remains uncertain how long his treatment will continue.
