Pagasa named “Aghon” as the first storm of 2024

The first storm of 2024 is expected to form or reach the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) early next week and will be known as “Aghon,” according to information released on Thursday by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Rhea Torres, a weather specialist with Pagasa, reports that cloud formations have been spotted beyond PAR. These could develop into a low-pressure area (LPA) and move toward the country’s proximity as a storm.

According to Torres, “The storm’s influence is likely to impact regions in Mindanao.”

In the meanwhile, most areas will have high temperatures because of easterlies, which are winds that come from the east, travel over the Pacific Ocean, and bring warm, humid weather with them.

When combined with the easterly winds, localized thunderstorms can produce isolated thunderstorms or periods of rain, especially in the late afternoon or evening.

Pagasa forecasted overcast skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in Batanes and Cagayan due to a frontal system. This system delineates a transition zone separating air masses with differing characteristics such as temperature and moisture content.
