Newly Built Bridge in Isabela Collapses, Injuring 6

Six people, including two children, were hurt when a new bridge in Barangay Casibarag Norte, Cabagan, Isabela, fell on Thursday night, February 27.

At around 8:00 PM, four vehicles—a truck, two SUVs, and a motorcycle—were crossing the bridge when it suddenly collapsed, causing them to fall into the river.

According to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 2, the collapse was caused by a dump truck passing over the bridge.

“The third span (from the Cabagan side) of the Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge, measuring 60 meters, collapsed when a dump truck carrying boulders, with an estimated weight of around 102 tons, crossed it,” DPWH Region 2 stated on Friday, February 28.

DPWH Region 2 is still investigating the incident.

“Further analysis is ongoing. We have requested experts from the Bureau of Design and the Bureau of Construction in the Central Office to conduct a more detailed evaluation,” the agency added.

The construction of the Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge began in November 2014 and is expected to be completed in February 2025. The total project cost, including the bridge and its approaches, is ₱1,225,537,087.92.
