Malacañang said on Sunday that fixing the San Juanico Bridge is very important to keep people safe and avoid accidents.
Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said, “We want to stop accidents before they happen, so we need to repair the bridge now.”
Because the bridge is getting old and weak, the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Eastern Visayas placed the area under blue alert. This means that more than half of the government workers in the region must be ready to respond in case of emergency.
Vehicles heavier than three tons are not allowed on the bridge. People are also not allowed to walk on it since Sunday.
To help commuters, the Department of Public Works and Highways has sent 13 shuttle buses for transportation.
