Filipina tennis star Alex Eala continued her impressive form with a commanding victory over Argentina’s Julia Riera, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals of the 2025 São Paulo Open. Eala, currently riding a seven-match winning streak, showing a strong momentum as she aims for her first WTA 250 title.
The 20-year-old opened the match in dominant fashion, racing to a 4-0 lead in the first set with aggressive baseline play and smart shot selection. Although Riera managed to break serve once, Eala closed the set confidently, keeping control throughout. The second set was more tightly contested, with Riera briefly taking a 2-1 lead. But Eala responded quickly, winning three straight games and sealing the match after 1 hour and 18 minutes of play.
Eala’s victory builds on her recent success after claiming the WTA Challenger title in Guadalajara. She now prepares to face Indonesia’s Janice Tjen in the quarterfinals—a rising player who made headlines at the 2025 US Open with an upset win over 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova.
