End of UniTeam? Marcos and Duterte Haven’t Spoken Since July

Vice President Sara Duterte recently apologized to Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KoJC) members for asking them to support him, but President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. dismissed her apologies on Wednesday, stating, “That’s her choice.”

Marcos acknowledged that he remains confused by Duterte’s remarks but admitted that there isn’t much he can do about it.

“That’s her decision. I still don’t fully understand why, but that’s what she wants, and we can’t change it,” he said.

At KoJC’s anniversary celebration in Davao City last weekend, Duterte apologized. During her speech, she criticized a previous police raid at the KoJC complex aimed at detaining Apollo Quiboloy, the group’s leader, who is accused of sexual abuse and human trafficking. Quiboloy has been a spiritual adviser and close ally of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte.

At the event, Duterte expressed regret to KoJC members for urging them to support Marcos during the election when she ran alongside him for vice president.

Marcos also mentioned that he has not spoken to Duterte since she resigned as education secretary in July.

“No, we have not spoken at all. The last time I saw her was when she submitted her resignation. Ever since then, we haven’t communicated,” Marcos said.

Though they formed the “UniTeam” alliance during the 2022 elections, it appears their relationship has since soured.
