Gloria, Oriental Mindoro — Residents of Barangay Malayong and Barangay Manguyang in Gloria, Oriental Mindoro can now breathe easier as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Southern Mindoro District Engineering Office completed the construction of an additional gabion revetment along the Banus River, providing stronger protection against flooding during heavy rains and typhoons.
According to Southern Mindoro District Engineer Annielyn E. Padullo, the project involves the construction of 326 linear meters of gabion revetment with sheet piles, integrated with the existing Banus River protection structure. The initiative, reported to DPWH MIMAROPA Regional Director Gerald A. Pacanan, CESO III, aims to reinforce the riverbanks and mitigate the threat of overflow that has long affected nearby communities.
Protecting Lives and Livelihoods
The upgraded river control structure offers critical flood protection to surrounding households and farmlands, significantly reducing risks of property damage and displacement. One of the key beneficiaries of the project is Malayong Elementary School, located just behind the project site. The reinforced river wall ensures the safety of students, teachers, and school facilities—areas that were once vulnerable during typhoon seasons.

Engineer Padullo emphasized that the improved infrastructure not only strengthens physical resilience but also promotes peace of mind and community safety. The project forms part of DPWH’s continuing efforts to protect vulnerable communities across MIMAROPA under the leadership of Director Pacanan, whose regional initiatives have consistently delivered high-impact flood control and road improvement projects.
Commitment to Safer Communities

DPWH MIMAROPA remains steadfast in its mission to implement infrastructure that safeguards lives, supports economic activity, and contributes to disaster resilience. The success of the Banus River Control rehabilitation is another step toward building a flood-free and secure community in Oriental Mindoro—aligning with the Marcos administration’s “Build Better More” vision for inclusive and sustainable development.
