Trump, Zelenskyy Discuss Military Aid and Peace Talks Ahead of Planned Trump-Putin Summit

October 17, 2025 | Washington, D.C. — Diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war gained new momentum on Friday as former U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House for more than two hours of discussions focused on military aid, security guarantees, and a potential ceasefire.

According to reports, the meeting centered on possible U.S. assistance to Ukraine and pathways toward a negotiated end to the conflict, now entering its third year. After the talks, Trump took to social media, urging both nations to “stop where they are” and “make a DEAL,” signaling openness to a settlement that could freeze hostilities along the current front lines.

Ukraine’s Push for Tomahawk Missiles

During the discussions, President Zelenskyy reportedly pressed the U.S. for the supply of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, which would allow Ukraine to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.

However, sources familiar with the talks said Trump appeared reluctant, citing concerns that such a move could further escalate tensions. His hesitation reportedly came after a recent phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The high-profile meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy came ahead of a planned Trump-Putin summit in Hungary, aimed at advancing potential peace negotiations. The summit, set to take place within the month, is expected to focus on ceasefire terms and broader security arrangements for Eastern Europe.

Diplomatic Crossroads

The latest series of engagements mark a pivotal moment for diplomatic efforts surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While Kyiv continues to seek stronger defense capabilities and Western backing, Trump’s stance suggests a push toward negotiation rather than escalation — a move that could reshape the geopolitical landscape if successful.
