DOTr, DPWH Plan Better Sidewalks for Commuters

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) are planning to build safer and more accessible sidewalks along EDSA. Their goal is to make walking easier and more comfortable for commuters, especially for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens. The two agencies conducted a joint inspection by walking four kilometers from Ayala Avenue in Makati to Roxas Boulevard in Pasay to understand the daily struggles of pedestrians.

DOTr Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the walk made him feel like a “warrior” because of how difficult it was to move around EDSA on foot. He explained that the President gave two main instructions to the DOTr: make public transportation safe and make it comfortable for all Filipinos — not just for motorists. This is why they want to make sure that sidewalks are wide, safe, and easy to use for everyone.

DPWH Secretary Dizon added that EDSA must become “commuter-friendly” after many years of complaints from the public. He said that people who walk on EDSA every day experience great stress, and it is time to fix the situation once and for all. The planned renovation and improvements on EDSA sidewalks are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
