Carlos Yulo has finally showcased his extraordinary talent on the world stage. The Filipino gymnast made history once again on Saturday, 3 August, by clinching the gold medal in the men’s floor exercise final at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
An Impressive Performance
Yulo achieved an impressive score of 15.000, flawlessly executing his three-and-a-half twist dismount. On the podium, he celebrated by pumping his fists before acknowledging the judges. He then saluted the cheering fans and placed his hands over his heart, expressing his gratitude and joy.
The competition was intense, with Tokyo 2020 champion Artem Dolgopyat of Israel earning the silver with a score of 14.966, and Great Britain’s Jake Jarman taking the bronze with a score of 14.933.
Making History for the Philippines
This gold medal is a historic first for the Philippines in gymnastics and only the country’s second Olympic gold, following Hidilyn Diaz’s victory in the Women’s 55 kg weightlifting event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Yulo’s victory is particularly significant given his recent struggles, including inconsistent performances at the Tokyo Games. Despite his immense talent, he has faced numerous setbacks, such as finishing last in the all-around qualifications at last year’s World Championships due to a zero score on the vault.
The 24-year-old gymnast, arguably the most accomplished the Philippines has ever produced, finally secured an elusive medal in gymnastics with a near-perfect routine. Ranked third before his performance, Yulo faced immense pressure following impressive routines by Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Artem Dolgopyat and silver medalist Rayderley Zapata.
Zapata delivered a strong routine, scoring 14.333, while Dolgopyat earned 14.966. Yulo then took the floor with confidence, dazzling fans worldwide with his performance. The judges awarded him 8.400 for execution and 6.600 for difficulty, resulting in his winning score of 15.000. His ecstatic scream upon hearing the score was a testament to his hard-fought triumph.
As other gymnasts completed their routines, the final score announcement for Great Britain’s Luke Whitehouse, who scored 14.466, confirmed Yulo’s victory. Overwhelmed with emotion, Yulo sank to the floor in tears.
Looking Ahead
With this gold medal, Yulo joins Hidilyn Diaz as one of the Philippines’ only two Olympic champions. This victory is a significant milestone for Filipino gymnastics and a testament to Yulo’s perseverance and exceptional talent. Yulo’s journey isn’t over yet, as he has the opportunity to add another medal to his collection in the men’s vault finals.
