At the Senior Men Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Friday, May 17 (Manila time), Carlos Yulo—who is headed to the Olympics in Paris—won his first gold medal in the individual all-around competition. Across the floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bar, Yulo displayed outstanding achievements. He finished first with a total score of 84.931 points.
In the 2022 and 2023 Asian Championships individual all-around, which were held in Qatar and Singapore, respectively, the 24-year-old Filipino had already won silver medals.
With 84.632 points, Milad Karimi of Kazakhstan finished second, trailing behind Yulo, and Abdullah Azimov, a local competitor, took third place with 82.431 points.
To further highlight his adaptability and talent on the global arena, Yulo hopes to increase the number of medals he has in his collection across a range of events, such as the floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bar.
In the previous year’s championships in Singapore, the two-time world champion excelled in the vault, floor exercise, and parallel bars competitions, securing gold medals, while clinching the bronze in the horizontal bar event.
Before this triumph at the Asian Championships, Yulo displayed remarkable performances, earning gold in parallel bars and silver in vault at the Doha leg of the FIG Artistics Gymnastics World Cup series last month.
Joining Yulo in the senior division of the Asian Championships are fellow Filipinos Juancho Miguel Besana, John Ivan Cruz, Justine Ace De Leon, and Jhon Santillan, while Yulo’s younger brother, Karl Eldrew, competes in the juniors category, highlighting the depth of talent within the Filipino gymnastics contingent.
