MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Approximately 28,000 Filipino drivers will be in demand in Japan and several European countries over the next five years, according to the Overseas Labor Market Forum. The demand includes positions for taxi, truck, bus, and train drivers, offering competitive salaries and various benefits.
In Japan, more than 24,000 taxi drivers and around 4,000 train drivers are needed. Monthly salaries range from ₱58,000 to ₱65,000. One key requirement for applicants is obtaining a language proficiency certificate in Nihongo. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) stressed that workers should not shoulder the cost of language training, which should be covered by employers.
Meanwhile, European countries such as Slovenia, Austria, and the Czech Republic are also seeking drivers for trucks, buses, and taxis. Salaries in these countries range from ₱55,000 to ₱142,000 per month. Applicants must be proficient in English to qualify for these positions.
The Philippine Association of Service Exporters, Inc. (PASEI) highlighted the need for upskilling Filipino drivers to meet international standards. Recommendations include training on operating automated vehicles and familiarising drivers with longer and more advanced buses commonly used in Europe.
DMW is coordinating with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to address these training needs. Taxi driver Rexon Noleal hopes such training programs will be offered for free, especially for younger applicants seeking better opportunities abroad.
DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac emphasised that beyond meeting job demands, ensuring the safety and ethical deployment of Filipino workers remains a priority. He urged host countries to guarantee the welfare of workers before issuing visas.
