A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 hit central Myanmar on Friday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The earthquake damaged buildings and was felt in many places across Southeast Asia, including Bangkok, Thailand.
The earthquake struck near Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar with over a million people, at 12:50 p.m. local time. A 6.4-magnitude aftershock happened 12 minutes later in a nearby area.
Since the earthquake was only six miles deep, it caused strong shaking. People in Bangladesh, including its capital, Dhaka, also felt the tremors, but no damage was reported.
The earthquake was also felt in Vietnam, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, according to the state-run news outlet VnExpress.
