South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared emergency martial law, citing threats to national security and accusing opposition forces of engaging in anti-state activities. The president announced the controversial measure during a live televised address on Tuesday.
“To protect a free and democratic South Korea from the dangers posed by North Korea’s communist forces and to eradicate anti-state elements, I am compelled to declare emergency martial law,” Yoon stated. He emphasized that this step was necessary to rebuild the country and restore order.
Since assuming office in 2022, Yoon has faced significant challenges in advancing his policies, often clashing with an opposition-controlled National Assembly. The ongoing standoff between the ruling conservative People Power Party and the liberal Democratic Party has intensified over debates surrounding next year’s budget.
“The National Assembly has slashed funding crucial for national operations, public safety, and drug crime prevention, crippling the state’s ability to function effectively,” Yoon remarked. “This has created chaos, turning our nation into a sanctuary for drugs and undermining public safety.”
The president has also faced criticism for dismissing calls for independent investigations into corruption allegations involving his wife and senior officials. Opposition leaders have condemned his refusal to cooperate, with many accusing him of authoritarian overreach.
Yoon defended the martial law declaration as an essential step to protect the nation’s stability. “This measure is unavoidable to secure the freedom and safety of our citizens and preserve the nation’s future against the turmoil incited by subversive forces,” he said.
The announcement has sparked strong backlash, including from within Yoon’s own party. Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the People Power Party, publicly criticized the move, stating, “The declaration of martial law is a mistake, and I will stand with the people in opposing it.”
The opposition Democratic Party has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis and its potential consequences. Political tensions are expected to escalate further in the wake of this unprecedented declaration.
