Ricky Hatton Dies at 46: Boxing World Mourns Former Champion Known as “The Hitman”

Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton, one of the sport’s most beloved and charismatic figures, has died at the age of 46. Authorities in the United Kingdom confirmed that Hatton was found dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester on Sunday morning. Police reported that his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Hatton, known as “The Hitman,” rose to fame in the 2000s with his relentless pressure style and fearless approach inside the ring. He became a world champion in two weight divisions, holding the WBA, IBF, IBO, and The Ring light-welterweight titles, and later capturing the WBA welterweight crown.

Over a storied career, Hatton compiled an outstanding professional record of 45 wins (32 by knockout) against 3 losses. His most iconic victory came in 2005 when he shocked the boxing world by defeating Kostya Tszyu to win the IBF and The Ring titles. Later that year, he unified the division by defeating Carlos Maussa for the WBA belt.

Hatton’s popularity extended far beyond the UK. He was adored for his blue-collar roots and magnetic personality, drawing tens of thousands of fans wherever he fought. His bouts in Las Vegas, including high-powered clashes against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, turned arenas into a sea of British flags and singing supporters.

Earlier this year, Hatton announced a planned return to the ring for an exhibition fight in Dubai this December against Eisa Al Dah. The comeback was highly anticipated, but his sudden passing has left the boxing world in shock.

Tributes have poured in from across the globe. Fellow fighters, former rivals, and boxing organizations remembered Hatton not only as a world champion but also as a fan favorite whose impact on the sport will never be forgotten.

Ricky Hatton’s legacy as “The Hitman” lives on—not just in the titles he won, but in the passion and loyalty of the fans he inspired.
