Protecting Lives and Fields: Flood-Free Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro

Over 2,000 residents living near the Wasig River in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro, are now better protected from the threats of erosion and flooding following the completion of the Wasig River Control (downstream) project, spearheaded by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Southern Mindoro District Engineering Office (DEO).

According to Southern Mindoro District Engineer Annielyn E. Padullo, who reported the development to DPWH MIMAROPA Regional Director Gerald A. Pacanan, CESO III, the project involved the construction of a 300.00-linear-meter flood control structure. The structure is built with a 6-layer gabion, steel sheet piles, and a slope protection system, ensuring both stability and long-term resilience against strong water currents and heavy rainfall.

The Wasig River Control project stands as a vital infrastructure that safeguards not only the surrounding communities but also the rice fields nearby. By mitigating the risk of flood-related damages, the project contributes to improved safety, security, and productivity for the people of Mansalay.

This development highlights the DPWH’s ongoing commitment to building climate-resilient infrastructure across Oriental Mindoro, strengthening communities against natural disasters while supporting sustainable local growth.

Wasig River Control project marks a significant milestone in protecting both the residents and farmlands of Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. By ensuring safer living conditions and safeguarding vital agricultural areas, the initiative not only addresses immediate flood risks but also secures long-term resilience for the community.
