Heartbreak in Manila: Alas Pilipinas Pushes Iran to the Limit

Manila, Philippines — Alas Pilipinas Men’s campaign in the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship ended in heartbreak after a five-set thriller against powerhouse Iran, but not before making history on homeland.

The Filipinos, ranked No. 77 in the world, nearly pulled off a monumental upset over world No. 16 Iran on September 18. Alas Pilipinas even held multiple match points in the deciding set, only to see momentum shift after a crucial challenge overturned what looked like Kim Malabunga’s match-winning block. Iran survived, 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 22-20, to advance to the Round of 16.

Despite the loss, the tournament marked a breakthrough for Philippine men’s volleyball. After dropping their opener to Tunisia in straight sets, the Fiipino’s pride team bounced back with a landmark win against Egypt — their first-ever victory in the World Championship. Bryan Bagunas powered the team with 25 points, while Marck Espejo sealed the match with a game-winning block.

In their final stand, Bagunas once again led the charge with 22 points, backed by Leo Ordiales’ breakout 21 and Espejo’s steady 15. Their spirited fight against Iran capped a campaign that proved the Filipinos can hold their own against the world’s best.

Alas Pilipinas may have bowed out early, but their grit, milestone victory, and near-upset of a global volleyball giant cemented their place in history — and signaled the rise of Philippine men’s volleyball on the world stage.
