Manila, Philippines – A protest calling for the ouster of Vice President Sara Duterte drew large crowds at the Edsa Shrine on Friday. However, interviews conducted by Rappler revealed that some attendees admitted they only participated because they were invited by their local officials, while others—despite being Duterte supporters—joined due to financial incentives.

The rally was organized by various groups demanding the impeachment of the vice president, accusing her of constitutional violations. Protesters also criticized both the House of Representatives and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for allegedly stalling the impeachment process.
Calls for Action in Congress
Akbayan Representative Perci Cendana, who endorsed one of the three impeachment complaints against Duterte, lambasted the House leadership for what he called its “cowardice” in failing to act on the complaints.
“The time has come to take decisive action and finally impeach the vice president,” Cendana told the estimated 10,000-strong crowd. “As long as she remains in power, corruption will continue to thrive in our government.”
Cendana expressed frustration over the inaction of Congress, pointing out that the first impeachment complaint was filed on December 2, 2024.
“What’s the date now?” he asked. “January is almost over, yet Congress has yet to act. Will lawmakers allow themselves to be intimidated and silenced by Sara’s weak and flimsy excuses?”
He urged his fellow legislators to prioritize their “moral and national obligations” over concerns for the upcoming midterm elections in May.
As the impeachment battle continues, the fate of the vice president remains uncertain, with both critics and supporters closely watching Congress’ next move.
