Filipina tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala begins her campaign as the top seed at the WTA 125 Jingshan Tennis Open 2025 in China today, September 23. The 20-year-old world No. 58 faces Belarusian player Aliona Falei in the opening round.
Eala heads into the tournament with momentum from a string of career milestones. Earlier this month, she lifted her first WTA 125 title at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico, marking a breakthrough victory in her professional career. In June, she climbed to a career-high WTA ranking of No. 56 after finishing runner-up at the WTA 250 Eastbourne Open in Great Britain.
On the Grand Slam stage, Eala made history at the 2025 US Open, becoming the first Filipina tennis player to win a singles main draw match in the Open Era. She defeated Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the first round before falling to Cristina Bucșa in the second round.
Most recently, Eala reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 São Paulo Open in Brazil, where she was defeated by Indonesia’s Janice Tjen.
With the Jingshan Tennis Open underway, Eala has another opportunity to strengthen her WTA standing and push closer to a return to her career-best ranking. A deep run in China could also bring her closer to breaking into the world’s Top 50
