The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in the Philippines is currently investigating possible money laundering activities and alleged misrepresentation of assets linked to Vice President Sara Duterte. NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed that they are tracing the flow of money to determine if transactions led to the acquisition of properties such as land, resorts, and hotels, which may conceal the true origins or ownership of the funds.
Matibag stated, "We are focused on 'follow the money' in this investigation." The NBI is also examining several properties that are declared as agricultural land but reportedly contain structures such as mansions, swimming pools, and even helipads. He noted that some declared values appear to be significantly understated, indicating possible misrepresentation.
The agency is assessing the sources of funding for these properties and verifying the accuracy of their declarations as assets. Matibag clarified that the investigation is ongoing, and the Office of the Ombudsman will determine whether there is enough evidence to file a formal complaint.
Preliminary investigation results may be forwarded to the Office of the Ombudsman and the Department of Justice within the week.
