In a surprising turn of events, the announcement that Vietnam would host the 76th Miss Universe competition in 2027 has sparked controversy, with conflicting statements causing uncertainty about the event's venue. Originally, the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) made the declaration on October 8, sharing it via a press release on a Miss Universe-branded website and through their social media channels.
However, shortly after this announcement, another statement emerged that denied Vietnam's designation as the host country. The MUO clarified that the official announcement regarding the host country would only occur after the conclusion of the 75th Miss Universe competition, set to take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They emphasized that any prior announcements, especially those not disseminated through their official channels, should not be viewed as valid by the organization.
The initial announcement had highlighted the natural beauty, cultural richness, and hospitality of Vietnam, expressing excitement about the upcoming competition. It identified Legacy Holding Group, S.A. de C.V., referred to as MU East, as the designated "Party in Turn" responsible for the event's planning and execution.
In stark contrast, the MUO's follow-up statement rejected MU East's authority, stating that it is not an affiliate or authorized representative of the organization. The organization further indicated that some of the Miss Universe-branded online platforms were operating under unauthorized management, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the content shared through those channels.
This discord comes amidst an ongoing dispute between Miss Universe officials and MU East, which is linked to Thai entrepreneur Nawat Itsaragrisil. The developments illustrate the complex dynamics within the Miss Universe Organization and raise questions about its governance and the future of the event in Vietnam.
Meanwhile, as the organizational saga unfolds, Bea Millan-Windorski from the Philippines is preparing to compete in the 2026 Miss Universe pageant, with aspirations to secure the nation’s fifth title. The Philippines, a strong contender in the pageant's history, has previously won the crown four times: in 1969, 1973, 2015, and 2018.
