“Dangerous” Heat Index of 46°C Forecasted for Metro Manila and Other Regions

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has issued a warning about a “dangerous” heat index of 46°C expected in three areas across the country, including Metro Manila, until Friday.

According to the state-run weather bureau, Pangasinan and Cavite are the other two affected areas.

The heat index in Nueva Ecija and Olongapo City is expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius, according to Pagasa forecaster Aldczar Aurelio. Temperatures in a few other areas are expected to range from 40 to 44 degrees Celsius.

According to Pagasa’s effect-based classification, a heat index of 42°C to 51°C is considered dangerous, raising the possibility of heat exhaustion and cramps as well as heat stroke with extended exposure.

In the late afternoon or evening, Aurelio pointed out that the intertropical convergence zone and the easterlies are having an impact on much of the nation, resulting in scattered thunderstorms and rain showers.

“Overall, the country can expect generally fair weather with clear skies, possibly extending into the weekend,” Aurelio stated.

He restated Pagasa’s warnings to avoid being outside as much as possible, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., as well as to avoid dehydration by drinking lots of water to stay hydrated.
