The World Artistic Gymnastics Championships kicked off today in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, featuring Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo, who is aiming to add to his impressive medal haul. His younger brother, Eldrew Yulo, is set to make his championship debut, hoping to secure his first medal as well.
Carlos Yulo arrives at the championship after a remarkable performance at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, where he clinched two gold medals just a few weeks ago. He is prepared for the competition in the individual all-around, beginning with qualification events tomorrow.
In the competition, Carlos plans to perform across six different apparatus, expressing optimism about reaching the finals. To date, he has triumphed in this annual championship multiple times, with three gold medals in total. Notably, he won two golds in the vault at the 2021 Kitakyushu championships and again in Jakarta last year, as well as a gold in the floor event in Stuttgart back in 2019.
Younger brother Eldrew, who recently earned a bronze medal at the Asian Games, is looking to establish himself on this international stage in Rotterdam. The Yulo brothers have been training rigorously in camps in Antwerp, Belgium, along with fellow athletes Miguel Besana and Haylee Garcia, all representing the Philippines.
Miguel Besana is the first of the contingent to compete, participating in the men's horizontal bar qualification round today. Haylee Garcia, the only female competitor representing the Philippines this year, will take her turn tomorrow.
As the championships progress, all eyes will be on the Yulo siblings, each aiming to leave a mark in their respective categories, contributing enthusiastically to the Filipino sports legacy.
