Cannes Film Festival Pays Tribute to Jaclyn Jose

The late actress Jaclyn Jose, who was the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win the Best Actress prize at this esteemed festival, was recently recognized by the Cannes Film Festival.

Jaclyn’s daughter Andi Eigenmann revealed that her mother died on March 2 from a heart attack. The veteran actress was 60 years old.

Jaclyn made history in 2016 when she defeated a number of well-known actresses, including Marion Cotillard, Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Elle Fanning, Sandra Hüller, Isabelle Huppert, and Ruth Negga, to win the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her remarkable performance in Brillante Mendoza’s “Ma’Rosa.” Even Oscar Award nominations were received by the latter two for their respective films, “Elle” and “Loving.”

Recalling the emotional moment she went through following her 2016 victory, the festival posted a picture of Jaclyn on Instagram, showing off her Best Actress award.

The festival wrote in the caption, “As with so many of her roles, she illuminated this beautiful portrait of a woman, embodying it with grace and humanity.”

The late actress has already been cremated, and several local celebrities attended her wakes as a way of showing their respect.

May 14–25 is when the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place. Director Xavier Dolan will head the Un Certain Regard category, and actress Greta Gerwig will serve as the jury president for the main competition. A number of highly anticipated films are expected to debut or compete in Cannes, including Clint Eastwood’s farewell feature “Juror No. 2,” Francis Ford Coppola’s eagerly awaited “Megalopolis” (his first picture in thirteen years), and George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.”
